I’ve done two glued-lap boats and the most important connection in the whole boat is the “lands” where the planks fit together. It’s a constantly-changing bevel and just can’t be done any other way than with a plane. Sanding (which I tried) rounds over the corners. You only get a nice, crisp angle with a plane. It’s not all that hard to do, as long as you keep the blade really sharp and use long sweeping strokes instead of hacking away the way I did when I first started out. And it’s fun to see those long, good-smelling shavings come off as the shape comes into the wood. You really feel like an old-timey boatbuilder instead of a machinist.
